The Dog Days of Summer

If you live in the United States, you know the Summer of 2011 will go down in the weather record books as one long, hot summer. As I type, our thermometer indicates the outdoor temperature is 100 degrees. That’s hot.

“That’s hot” reminds me of – no, not Paris Hilton – a quote from an 80s movie titled, “Biloxi Blues”. Matthew Broderick’s character says, “Man it’s hot. It’s like Africa hot. Tarzan couldn’t take this kind of hot.”

As I work from home and look out my window, I see the trees and leaves moving with the breeze. However, the breeze does nothing to cool the air. The fact that my dogs choose to lounge here, with me, rather than outside in their large backyard playground, tells me the wind is misleading, simply moving the hot air and not cooling it.

The heat is zapping me dry, depleting me of words to write and stories to share. I have entered the dog days of summer. Continue reading “The Dog Days of Summer”

Adventure Girl Trail Tales: #18 (Fin)

As I mentioned last week, I started this journal on March 4th. That night, the family gathered at a local restaurant to celebrate Adventure Girl’s ‘take off’. After dinner, we surprised Adventure Girl by moving the party to my brother’s house (Adventure Girl’s house).

Sure, Adventure Girl needed sleep, because she was beginning her 2,100 mile hike in the morning. Still, we wanted to celebrate. We wanted her to know we were behind her 100% (from the comfort of our couch).

My family consists of a crazy bunch of kids adults. We spare no expense when it comes to showing our support for one another. Case in point, when three of my sisters arrived at my brother’s house, they came with hiking gear. My sisters were all packed and ready to join Adventure Girl on her journey. The Painting and a Challange

Challenged by an inspiration, or inspired by a challenge – either way, I am taking an opportunity to create another Etheree. Thanks to Val Erde her blog Absurd Old Bird, I am using her work to create a piece of my own.

The challenge began with Val, and her post titled, “My challenge to you…”, inviting writers to create something on their own, using one of Val’s paintings and/or poems. Inspired, Woman Wielding Words and She’s a Maineiac took Val up on her challenge.
